Climate Change - letters to the PM

After studying the climate change texts in the Edexcel IGCSE anthology, year ten wrote letters to the Prime Minister exhorting him to take action. Here are a few highlights. Let them know what you think.

I know you have very likely heard all this before, but I kindly ask you to listen to it again. We all now global warming is a problem, with some places heating up or becoming colder, sea levels rising, and glaciers melting. This affects wildlife, and of course, people. Your people. Your people may be fine now, but if climate change does not subside, the future generations will have to suffer for your and our idiotic mistakes. The current severity of the situation is dire, and something must change, the matter cannot be ignored any longer or it may lead to catastrophe.

Do you ever wonder what is happening to our environment? The world is heating up as we speak and we cannot do anything about it without your help, and consent. The ice-caps are melting. The deserts are getting hotter. Storms are increasing, and I know why.

But as I say things aren’t going to change immediately but gradually if we all try together we can succeed. Do something different, actually make a change, make a difference to everyone’s life not just your own.

When your children become adults and are working, they may have to swim to their job. You alongside everyone in our country can make a change. Would you like to be the Prime Minister who changed this country or the Prime Minister who changed the ways of the world? We are the last generation that can change this catastrophic climate change. I’m not asking you to think economically, just realistically. This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. We should work together, as a team.  We as a country can make a change and if we do it then other countries will do the same and join us to a greener World. There is all this talk about action.

I’m prepared to make a stand against global warming but I’m nothing but a mere teenage boy. I doubt many people would listen to me but you’re David Cameron. You are the Prime Minister; people would be convinced to join in with the struggle against global warming if they were preached by such a wise man like yourself.

Do you care about the world and the animals?

If you don’t then you sir are a selfish man and it will be your job to explain to the human population why the animals are dying out and why more people around the world are dying.

  1. I love the phrase 'dishonour of our planet' Khayra. I would imagine that Mr Cameron thinks of hiself as an honorourable man and this turn of phrase may just strike a cord with him.

Ousman, your repetition of the word 'you're' places the emphasis and responsibility with our leader, hopefully alerting him to how crucial his own actions are in the fight against climate change.
Omar, you are so right to point out that this will not just be a problem abroad, this will and already does affect us ( and I had never really thought about canals before!)
Izzy, highlighting the fact that there are solutions is always a good approach to asking for something to be done differently. I always tell my husband, for example, how he can make the dinner and not burn it rather than just tell him he is a terrible cook.
Josh, I love the directness and punchiness of your opening lines. Very direct, I feel like O can see your protest banner!
Nevada, you are so right, education, letting people know about climate change will help to spread important messages.
