KS3 Science.... Answering the important questions.

Year 7 students were asked to make up scientific questions. I gave these questions to other students and asked them to research the answers and write them up in their own words. Here you will find some of the best answers. Have you got a scientific question that needs answering? Enjoy reading!

What is a shooting star?
A shooting star is another name for a meteoroid that burns up as it pushes through the Earth’s atmosphere. So that means a shooting star is not a star at all!

How was the Universe created?
There is a theory called: cosmological theory of the universe. The people that made this theory say that the Universe was made by a big explosion that formed lots of big rocks what we call now planets. Some people also call this the Big Bang Theory. So the universe was formed by a big explosion millions of years ago!

What makes a rainbow?
You see rainbows when there are lots of raindrops falling in a distance. These reflect sunlight back to your eyes. You can see lots of colours because the sunlight hits the raindrops at different angles. If you don’t know what reflection is you are going to do it in Y8 in science. When we look at a mirror, we see our reflection.

Why do puddles disappear so quickly?
It’s because of evaporation. Evaporation is when a liquid turns to gas when heated. The water in the puddle evaporates fast because of the heat from the sun.

Does the moon have an effect on humans or animals?
Some animals like wolves howl at the moon but I don’t think it’s because of the moon is affecting them. Some people say that they can’t sleep when there is full moon but no scientist has proven that the moon affects humans.

Why does ice float in water?
To answer this you have to understand what density means. Each material has its own density. Density shows how heavy something is for its size. Therefore a substance will float in water if it is less dense. Because ice is frozen it becomes less dense than water. In contrast, rocks are not frozen so that is why they sink (the rock is more dense than water).

  2. These questions are ones that many adults would not have a clue about and it is really nice to see Year 8s from Carr Manor showing an interest. I'm sure some of these facts will come in useful in quizzes!
